Description

Muránska planina is a large limestone plateau with many karstic elements. It is a territory with high biodiversity. There can be found a wide range of forest communities from oak level to spruce vegetation level in forested area. The area lies in the highest part of range of Stolické Hills. There are rare types of communities on the silicate debris in the northern part of the ridge.

Area protection

IBA Muránska planina – Stolické vrchy was designated a Special Protection Area (SPA) Muránska planina – Stolica on September 17, 2009.

Importance

The area is important as a breeding site of forest bird species, rocky habitats species and mountain meadows species. It is one of the top five Slovak areas for Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) and Tengmalm’s Owl (Aegolius funereus).
