Description

The prevailing habitats are beech forests, to a lesser extent oak and mixed forests. In the foothills there are important transitional habitats between the forests, vineyards and agricultural landscapes with a significant mosaic structure.

Area protection

IBA Malé Karpaty was designated a Special Protection Area (SPA) on April 29, 2005.

Importance

Malé Karpaty is the most important area in Slovakia for nesting of Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug). Significant populations of the Eastern Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca), Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus), several types of Woodpeckers and Passerines, especially cavity nestlers are breeding in the territory.
