Description
This hilly area is located in northeastern Slovakia in orographical unit Bukovské vrchy. Beside the dominant Carpathian beech woods there can be found oak and hornbeam forests, maple and fir woods in combination with beech woods. Agricultural land is represented primarily by permanent grassy vegetation and in lesser extent by arable land.
Area protection
IBA Bukovské vrchy was designated a Special Protection Area (SPA) on January 7, 2008. Other protected areas in the region of IBA Bukovské vrchy: Poloniny National Park
Importance
Preserved forests and diverse mosaic of non-forest communities provide favorable conditions for nesting of forest and meadow birds. Territory belongs to the five most important localities for nesting of Hazel Grouse (Tetrastes bonasia/Bonasa bonasia), European Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus) and Corncrake (Crex crex) in Slovakia.
