Districts: Nové Zámky, Komárno
Altitude: 105 m – 172 m
Area: 359,07 km2
Description
The territory is formed mainly of agricultural land with intensive use. In the nonforest vegetation there are locally represented fragments of saline soil communities. In the vicinity of watercourses can be found extensively used meadows, wetlands and oxbow lakes. Locally, especially near rivers, forest habitats are situated that are formed to a significant extent by cultivated poplars. In some places are preserved fragments of floodplain forests with natural species composition.
Area protection
IBA Dolné Považie was designated a Special Protection Area (SPA) on October 12, 2006.
Importance
Area represents one of the major Slovak nesting places of steppe bird species bounded to open habitats of the lowlands. Fragments of wetland habitats are important refuges for nesting of waterfowl. Part of the territory has varied landscape structure. Water, wetland, meadow, forest and agricultural habitats occur on a relatively small area. Grassland habitat types with fragments of salt marshes and meadows are important bird refuges in nonbreeding season. In the area nests the last regularly breeding population of Roller (Coracias garrulus) in Slovakia.
