Description

It is a mountainous, mostly forested area with predominance of beech forests, oak-beech forests and oak forests. Arable land and unused pastures can be found in the non-forested and foothill area. There can be found also mountain meadows in a lesser extent.

Area protection

IBA Vihorlat was designated a Special Protection Area (SPA) Vihorlatské vrchy on April 16, 2010.

Importance

The most significant Slovak population of Short-toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus) is nesting here. It is an important breeding site of forest bird species, bird species that nest and hunt on the meadows, pastures and bush habitats.
